They're able to pry open the manhole with, well, as much ease as it would take two men to pry open a manhole. It's a heavy sucker, but they manage.
Beneath the manhole is about what one would expect in prying open a manhole! The concrete cylinder continues downward into the earth, with metal rungs of a ladder leading downward as well. It's too dark to tell how far down it goes, but in listening closely, they'll be able to hear what sounds like running water coming from the hole. There's a slight draft coming out of it, as well.
The boys will also notice that the exterior of the manhole reads BEACON SEWER. It's wore with age, but the words are still clear as they've been molded into the metal.
Peter's spidey sense won't note anything nefarious about the hole. Jason's detective skills aren't of much use at this point, but he will note that the sewer doesn't smell like a sewer. It doesn't smell like much of anything down there, actually! Lucky for them? Maybe?
