The boys descend into a sewer tunnel. It's very dark in here, and given that Jason and Peter just have their lanterns to see by, traversing the sewer will be slow going.
The sewer's floor slopes toward the center, down which a shallow stream flows in the direction that Jason and Peter came from. Luckily, the water in these tunnels isn't too putrid. In fact, it's a bit murky, but clearly this place hasn't held actual sewage in a long time. The ceiling is roughly five feet from the floor at the wall, whereas the middle of the tunnel arches to about seven feet. It's cramped, but, well, it's a sewer.
Traveling in the direction that would presumably lead back toward the town center, the boys will find that the tunnel has collapsed just a few minutes' walk from the manhole they came in from. So, dead end in that direction!
Traveling deeper into the woods, however, will earn them quite a long walk. About two hours of traveling down the sewer tunnel will land them at a gate, out of which the stream is flowing. There's a door in the gate, but it's locked tight. No matter what the boys try, they won't be able to get it open on this trip.
Would they like to investigate anything further about the area before heading back?
