Hello mods, and yes of course. I'm just going to number the points to run through them ♡
1. So unfortunately it really is that ambiguous in the game. The power of waking is meant to be used in this way: to travel through a person's heart and find the world inside them, then wake them from sleep. But instead Sora does the opposite, traveling through worlds to find hearts. This is said in game to be an abuse of power that comes with a very high cost.
Sora arrives in a place called the Final World, where he meets a guide that explains that he's alive but only just. The realms of sleep and death touch, and while Sora has been passing in and out of them, getting very close several times, he hasn't yet crossed the line. When he abuses the power of waking immediately afterwards for the sake of rescuing his friends, he knows that doing so is killing him, bring him closer and closer over that line. While he manages to get everyone else back in one piece, he acknowledges that it "will take all my heart" to find Kairi. He knows it will cost his life and does it anyway.
The final scene in the game is Sora and Kairi appearing back home, but Sora literally fades away (start video at 6:14) in the light of the sun. Death is pretty nebulous in Kingdom Hearts and it's notoriously difficult to destroy a heart. What Sora has done was basically that scene in Harry Potter when Sirius Black and his entire body physically pass through the veil of death. The narrative and several pieces of dialogue tell us that Sora is no longer in the realm of light (alive.)
2. This is a great question! For reasons unknown Sora is shown reacting to the feelings of strangers and to loose friends. In the interest of not godmodding anyone, I thought I might just put it down as an intense empathy thing and use a permissions post.
3. I actually think that's a great limitation! Thank you ♡
