Applications are currently CLOSED.
In the Night's application system operates every other month. They will next open on May 22 at 12:01 AM EST!

•••

Hello, and welcome to In the Night! We're excited to have you, but before you apply, we ask that you familiarize yourself with the following:
  • Make sure you look over the premise, rules, and FAQ pages.

  • Be sure to check the taken page to make sure the character you want to app is not already spoken for.

  • Current players apping second/third characters may app at any time during the application period, as they already occupy player slots.

  • Applications will no longer be screened, but in the event that we receive more apps than we have available player slots, we'll inform the players that didn't quite make the cut-off. They'll be able to re-app in a future app cycle without consequence.

  • App cycles begin at the end of the month, with applications always opening on the 22nd. Please check the calendar for exact dates. Judgments and questions will be handed out once applications close, and new characters will arrive in the game on the first day of the following month.

  • There is currently a total game cap of 70 players, and a cast cap of 7 characters per cast. Each player may play a maximum of 3 characters.

  • You are limited to 1 app per player per month.

  • In the Night does not have a reserve period and there are no app challenges.

  • We do accept proxy apps! If you won't be around when applications open, you're welcome to have a friend submit the app for you. As we ask that apps be written in separate journal entries and linked to this page, this should be as simple as dropping a link! We only ask that your friend include a note in the comment that it's a proxy application, just in case we need to contact you before the app is processed.

Application instructions/process:
  • Make sure you fill out the application completely.

  • The only section you are exempt from is the CRAU section, provided you are not playing a CRAU character.

  • You are free to rearrange the sections of the app if you wish (everything under the world description, that is).

  • You may provide links to wiki pages for the history and world sections, but if these are not informative enough, you may be asked to do a small write-up of your own.

  • When posting apps, please post them to your character's journal and link them in the comments below. All comments on this page are initially unscreened, but you may lock your app to only be visible to the mod journal (@inthenightmods) if you wish. If you aren't sure how to do this, let us know and we'll walk you through it!

  • The subject line should contain Name | Canon | New Player/Current Player.

  • We require both log and network samples. One of these samples must be from our game's TDM, and one must be a thread with replies. One thread can meet both qualifications.

  • We do not ask for revisions, we simply ask questions. Think of it as more of a dialogue than a correction. We may ask for clarification on certain points or ask for more information, but we generally won't ask you to change something.

  • If you receive questions on your app, you must respond within 48 hours. Failure to do so will result in a rejection.

  • If you want examples, please see the mod characters and sample apps in the comments.

  • If you post your app after the player slots have been filled, we will keep you in a temporary queue to fill any player slots that become available between apps opening and our activity check closing, which happens at midnight on the last day of the month. In this event, we will contact you directly!

  • The application (with guidelines) is in the box below:

Sure thing!

1. Though there's not much canon evidence for him reacting one way or the other to change, I don't see him as the type to handle this level of change very well. He's adaptable, but his adaptations have always happened under the assumption that he's moving up or somehow furthering his career. The dude hasn't had a lot of bad luck or hardship in his life, so something as dramatic as dying and coming to an afterlife lacking a lot of the things he loves is going to be hard on him psychologically. He'll adapt with time, but "recover" isn't exactly the word I'd use. It's more that he'll be forced into growing up and accepting it (because his only other option is to be miserable, and, no?). I imagine his first few weeks in Beacon will be spent in fierce, stubborn denial of his new situation, but gradually he'll find a way to give himself a purpose. His knowledge and interests can absolutely be made useful in this setting, though it'll take a bit for him to realize that.

2. While Newt's arrogant and tends to assume he's the smartest person in the room, he's always excited to learn new things, especially in his areas of expertise. A good example of this is in canon, when Newt gets to see a black market dealer's collection of Kaiju specimens. His immediate reaction is pretty classic "kid in a candy shop", running around too excited to form coherent sentences or linger on one topic for too long. He knows he's dealing with a shady criminal who likely has no scientific interest in the specimens and is just looking to profit off of them, but it doesn't stop him from being just so hype to learn about preservation techniques and anatomical details that he, the leading Kaiju expert, does not already know. Arrogant as he may be, he loves talking shop and sharing information, and even manages to keep his ego out of the equation (unless the other person gets sassy, that is).

No problem!

For the first question: Will has a tendency to use other people to get what he wants, and charging for his services is just another manifestation of that. So while some of his prices may be physical items like drugs, alcohol, cigarettes and other sorts of "contraband" that characters brought from their home worlds, others will be more akin to favors. He might want something done that he isn't willing to do himself, (usually involving physical activity,) or he might create a sort of favor-chain by making characters do something for Rastus in order to procure items that he himself wants. If he can't think of anything he needs or wants at the moment, he might resort to just being needlessly cruel. Which ties into my answer to the second question!

Will is a grudge-holder. If someone made him angry, (more than he normally is, anyway,) Will would be likely to hike his "prices" next time this person came to him. He might ask for something more important to this character, or ask them to do something that would be personally humiliating or especially difficult. If he dislikes them enough, he might demand that they do something dangerous. These things wouldn't necessarily be for his benefit outside of tormenting the other person. Of course, if his survival is on the line, all of that goes out the window; he's much more likely to help people if what they're working for is important to his own continued existence, grudges aside.

In regards to age, due to the fact that Mary is not and has never been a human child, she's never necessarily had anyone to care for her in the ways that a regular child would expect care. Although she expresses herself, for the most part, in the same ways any regular girl her age would, because "9" is only the age by which she's always been, she's lived for an undetermined length of time. Needing to eat and sleep will be new to her, so she may initially require assistance or instruction, but aside from her simple desire to have company, independence shouldn't be an issue for her! Once she understands the facets of her new reality, she'll adapt accordingly. Often times, she plays up her apparent youth to get what she wants, and not necessarily because she doesn't actually know any better.

As for the second question, it's interesting! This is something that I'm definitely looking forward to finding out for myself as the game progresses. Fortunately, because it's so much like the world she recalls, it won't necessarily have a negative change on her personality other than frustration and perhaps a general impulse to be less-human in her behaviors. She may swing, like a child has a temper tantrum, into less stable moods, bouts of violence, and a manic giddiness to cope with the stress of the situation. But she's not unreasonable, and having company that can emote with her and talk her out of these more inhuman modes of expression will be a big help to her! Even without having anyone her age, mentors and role models are a welcome change to the equally unstable paintings by which she's ordinarily surrounded.

As another aside, one of the things that she's missed so dearly is the ability to live with her father, the artist. Where there may be a lack of children, I can't imagine she'll have as much trouble finding someone by which she may find the fatherly figure that she's been lacking.

Let me know if there's anything further that I can clarify!

She's a quantum physicist! She specializes in things like atoms, but given the fact she quickly moved from suspending atoms in midair to, you know, tearing open the universe, I headcanon she's got a pretty decent grip on all the sciences.

A lot of other abilities are inferred things: ie, she can dance, because she and Robert are seen to waltz at once point; she's fairly okay with blood and can at least handle a weapon, because she and Robert killed and mutilated a man just to get Booker really motivated. She enjoys art (she's stolen a rare painting, I know I've mentioned that but I just am constantly in awe of it), literature, and learning: we know she's yanked books from the future in order to study more, and looks into things like psychology, a field that has little to do with her chosen one.

And for the second question: I do! I think her being a supernatural being really led to a lot of detachment for her: it's very easy not to care about things when you're so removed from them, after all, and when you've seen a hundred failed versions already. And lbr, Rosalind was never particularly caring in the first place. She has a severe issue of apathy and an unimpressed air, even with those she might otherwise have felt something for in canon.

(Ie: at no point does her dialogue indicate any pity or remorse for Elizabeth, or indeed, even recognition. And yet in her journals, we do see Rosalind is self-aware: she knows how she contributed to Comstock's madness, and how much is her own fault. We can assume she acknowledges the same for her contribution in ruining Elizabeth's life, and yet supernatural!Rosalind really just does not care at all. I mean, the second the ending is confirmed the Luteces just yeet out of the game, they just go, they have done their job and that's that.)

So yes! I think her development here will be different because she's always been human, and at no point was even aware there was another option. She'll be slightly (slightly) more in touch with her emotions and with the more minute reality of day-to-day things, rather than constantly thinking on a broader, universal scale.

- For starters, Pikachu's control over his powers is currently erratic to begin with, although at his point in his canon he is beginning to have a better grip on them than before so he can actually utilize them to some degree. Pikachu in game would be able to do damage, though he could not use an attack like Flash that would be solely light based as the light would not manifest as anything more than perhaps a shadow. As for powering a machine, Pikachu could potentially be able to kickstarter a machine with electricity but anything more nuanced than that (i.e. consistent powering of a machine, particularly a complex machine) would be unlikely given his current control over his powers is erratic. So for example he could probably give a car with a dead battery a jolt to give it that bit of extra life to get started but he could not act in place of the car's battery for the car to run long term.

- I think it would be possible for Pikachu to potentially unlock his memories as Harry Goodman and I certainly think that journey would be a fascinating thing to explore in game. At the point from which he is taken Pikachu is already questioning the narrative that he was fed by Howard and hasn't had proper time to digest it so this will lead him further down the rabbit hole of trying to piece the mystery together. However, his loss of memory is from more than just simple amnesia so likely it would require some outside help to access the well of memories, and this I could see stemming from an event or potential character interactions. So yes, I would definitely love to play out that realization at some point if there is an organic means of having Pikachu come to that realization.
